Maxine “Max" Coleman is almost completely deaf and uses sign language to talk. She is the youngest in the Coleman family. 5 years old. Throughout the film, it is shown that Max wanted a sister really bad and was ecstatic to meet Esther Coleman, her new adoptive sister. It is shown that she never wanted her sister to get in trouble. When she saw Esther push Brenda, a girl that bullied Esther, off the slide she covered for her when asked by her mom what happened that night. She said "She slipped". Esther manipulated her into thinking that she actually cared for her through Sign Language, and given Max's young age it almost worked. Saying things like "Your my little sister. I won't let anything happen to you. I love you." and loving her more then anybody else she knew was showing at that time. She saved her brother Daniel Coleman from getting his head smashed in by pushing Esther down. She also used her dad's gun to break through ice at the end of the movie when Kate Coleman almost died. She basically saved her. Max almost died playing by ice when she was younger as a result of Kate getting drunk and not keeping an eye on her. This permanently damaged Maxes ears and was the reason she's almost 100% deaf. She has no recollection of this.
